EDMONTON WOMEN'S FILM SOCIETY
The Edmonton Women’s Film Society was formed in March 2004, as a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to promote women in film. Our focus is on women as writers, directors, actors, and producers; in which to explore the esthetic value of film and to develope interest in the technical skills of film video and media arts. In order to do this we developed the Reel Femme festival series so that we could showcase female artists in an unbiased atmosphere.
We started in the fall with Reel Femme ‘04 at Fava in the Ortona Armoury Arts Building and had a great showing! That event screened 5 films by local and international artists. Next spring we kicked off our fundraising with “An Evening Of Women Performing the Blues” at the Yardbird Suite. Performances by Kat Danser and Mo Lefebvre were highlighted, and we ended the evening with poetry and a silent auction.
Reel Femme ‘05 was held at the Metro cinema in the falling fall, after which we unanimously decided to move our festival to the spring and to make it now a 3-day event.
Reel Femme '06 was held at the Metro Cinema and The Stanley A. Milner Library and showcased 25 films. We followed that up with the Fall Fundraising Event, the "2nd Annual Evening of Women Performing the Blues", featuring Rae Waters, and we finished it up with another large silent auction.
Reel Femme '07 was a 3-day event which started off Friday evening at the Metro Cinema with our special guest artists Anne Wheeler and Tantoo Cardinal in attendance for the screening of Anne's Films "Edge of Madness" and "Suddenly Naked". At the reception at the after screening Gala, Anne and Tantoo answered numerous audience questions and held many great discussions. On Saturday, our festival was held in conjunction to a feminist conference taking place at the
Reel Femme '08 had us going back to a 2-day event, but with 3 special guest artists. Sandi Somers, Kelly Beaton and Sylvie Van Brabant were on hand Friday evening at the Metro Cinema where we screened numerous shorts by Sandi and Kelly. After the screenings we held a reception which included our 3 guests. Saturday found us at Fava for a workshop and two documentary screenings.
For Reel Femme '09 we went to a 4-day event which featured special guest artist Jennifer Fox. We dcreened Jennifer`s documentary `Flying - Confessions of a Free Woman in 6-1hr long epidsodes at Fava over Monday and Wednesday, May 4th & 6th. We continued the screenings at Metro on Friday May 7th with "Beruit:The Lost Home Movie" at 7pm and with 3 shorts at 9pm. Friday evening also saw us welcome our special Guest Jennifer Fox to speak with all who wished while attending the gala. On Saturday afternoon at Fava, Jennifer welcomed all to attend her workshop on securing International funding. Saturday evening had us screening 7 more films at Metro.
